Clovelly and Smugglers

Main street of Clovelly.

The weather is still very changeable with strong winds and bouts of rain. Otherwise it is sunny and we still haven't reverted to jumpers even at night. Lovely home made spaghetti bolognese for tea last night which was delicious and made from locally sourced ingredients - Morrison's supermarket in Bude.

Today after rain delayed the start of play we traveled North for a change to Clovelly. This is the quintessential coastal village. However, it has become so picturesque that there is now an entry fee (bit like Wales actually). We wondered why there was such a large parking area and entry facilities at the top of the cliff and no village in sight. You will see from the pictures the reason and the beauty of this hidden gem.

First glimpse of the village. Then you turn a corner and go back in time.

The descent into Clovelly was cobbled and very steep. Thankfully it was dry on our visit and less hazardous.

You can almost hear the pirates of old mingling with the local smugglers as they land on this rugged coast.

We waited out another passing shower and then began the ascent. It was lunchtime so we stopped halfway through the village (nearly one third up) for a meal of Cornish pasties. Yummy!!
As we continued we encountered the local methods for making deliveries and garbage collection.

Each cottage has a wooden sled outside with a box on it. So that's how they cope with the cobblestones and steep gradients. We saw quite a few babies in pushers who looked like they woul d never again be able to smile properly or adjust to even surfaces!!!
When we left Clovelly we went exploring this part of Devon further.

Came across the Smugglers' Inn at a remote point that jutted out into the Atlantic. The wind was strong enough for us to smell the exhaust of the New York taxis!!! But the view was exceptional.

Time is up so we will have to go. Love you all Poss and Pop!!
